Karyotypic characterization of two species of the genus Serrapinnus (Characiformes, Characidae), with the description of a structural polymorphism in S. heterodon

چکیده
The family Characidae, one of the largest and more diversified fish families in the Neotropical region, is certainly not a monophyletic group, which is supported by the cytogenetic data showing its extensive chromosome variability. In this work, two species of the genus Serrapinnus, S. heterodon and S. piaba, from the São Francisco river basin were analyzed. Both species presented the same diploid number, 2n=52 chromosomes, and the same karyotypic formula, 16m+20sm+14st+2a. The heterochromatin distribution, evidenced by C-banding, was also similar between both species. On the other hand, two NORs were evidenced in S. heterodon, while a multiple NOR system was characterized in S. piaba, both confirmed by silver nitrate staining as well as by fluorescent in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA probe. Furthermore, two additional karyotypes (cytotypes) were observed in S. heterodon, with 15m+20sm+14st+3a and 17m+20sm+14st+1a chromosomes, respectively, characterizing a structural chromosome polymorphism in the population. The differences between the three S. heterodon karyotypic forms are probably due to pericentric inversions related to the 8th and 26th chromosome pairs.

Cytogenetic divergence in two sympatric fish species of the genus Astyanax Baird and Girard, 1854 (Characiformes, Characidae) from northeastern Brazil
The fish genus Astyanax is widespread throughout the Neotropical region and is one of the most species-rich genera of the Characiformes. Cytogenetic studies of Astyanax have revealed marked intra- and interspecific diversity, with the identification of various species complexes. In this report, we describe the karyotypic structure of two sympatric species of Astyanax (Astyanax sp. and Astyanax ...

Four populations of Serrapinnus notomelas and one population of Serrapinnus sp.1, both belonging to the subfamily Cheirodontinae, were analyzed by Giemsa and silver nitrate impregnation techniques. We found 2n = 52 chromosomes for all populations, with interspecific differences in the karyotype formula; S. notomelas showed 16 m + 22 sm + 10 st + 4a, with fundamental number (FN) = 100 for males,...

The species of genus Astyanax is widely distributed in freshwater neotropical zones. Astyanax is considered to be taxonomically confused, similar to other genera placed incertae sedis in Characidae. The cytogenetics of this genus is well characterized; species vary widely in diploid number, from 2n=36 chromosomes in Astyanax schubarti to 2n=50 for most species studied. The size, number, and pos...

The family Characidae, order Characiformes, is one of the most numerous and diverse families of freshwater fishes in South America (Nelson, 2006), consisting of approximately 597 recognized species (Buckup et al., 2007). The genus Astyanax, a speciose group of Neotropical characids, comprises about 86 valid species (Lima et al., 2003) that occur in diverse habitats within freshwater drainages f...
